The Nakamura-kai

A heavy RP FC-based campaign inspired by a unique fusion of Shadowrun, cyberpunk, Bakumatsu-era Japan, film noir, and the Yakuza games.

The Nakamura-kai is an up-and-coming yakuza gang establishing itself in Kugane behind a legitimate security front, Kurenai Tokumu. Its unusual leader wants more than just money and infamy: he wants to steer Hingan politics away from its suffocating trajectory and toward a freer, more independent future separate from the Mitsurugi chokehold. Of course, there's no change without a little bloodshed...Our Hingashi is set in a Bakumatsu-style era. The emperor is a toothless figurehead while the Mitsurugi accumulate power and hamstring other clans to avoid being overthrown. The result is a proxy war between clans, businesses, and the government, with gangs like ours serving as deniable assets.We're not the strongest or best connected, and we don't pretend to be. Both halves of the business, legitimate and criminal, have to work together to profit, survive setbacks, and hold their ground in a dangerous setting. We want to roleplay the climb to power, perils and pitfalls included.Plots unfold in seasons shaped by our collective choices, so the FC evolves organically and we're in it for the long haul. Every member can leave a real mark on the story, for better or worse. Noncombatants are welcome too: DMed scenes include espionage and tricky social maneuvering, not just combat.

We want to help you be successful as a member, so we've put together these guidelines and expectations that will help you thrive in our setting. Our campaigns routinely run for months, so we are looking for serious writers who are in it for the long haul.Our fundamental standard: Members are expected to use proper capitalization, punctuation, quotation marks, etc. Everybody makes mistakes, but please make an effort so others can understand you.

Don't tune out.
We use Discord to run some events, post summaries, give important plot context and even as an IC linkpearl. If you mute the server, you will miss out, feel lost in the plot, and others will not have an opportunity to connect with you. We are looking for enthusiastic, curious, and active writers who care about their craft and are clearly investing themselves into the community.Set realistic expectations.
We do our best to give all players opportunities, honor preferences, and create engaging plots, but we're all human and there will be shortcomings. We need members to be constructive and understanding, have perseverance, and be willing to compromise.Play well with others.
Roleplay is a collaborative activity that requires everyone to "yes, and" each other. Act with good intentions while recognizing that RP is tricky and misunderstandings are extremely common in spite of our best efforts. When problems arise, focus on looking for a solution rather than litigating purity.Take the setting seriously.
Our world is complex, dangerous, and responsive, and many problems cannot be solved simply. We exist in a hierarchy and our stories require a baseline of respect for authority, social status, and power. The Sekisegumi are not impotent punching bags, the Mitsurugi are terrifying, and while your superiors will not require absolute obedience, flagrant disrespect must be approached cautiously -- there is a level of extreme disruption that is incompatible with our setting.Be a good participant.
Honor your plans, be on time, and come prepared. Invest in the story, theorize, dig in, ask questions -- show you care about the details and don't worry about doing everything perfectly. Be proactive if you want things to happen.Motivate your character.
We are looking for characters who want to do more than just insert themselves into the setting and aura farm -- they must have needs and wants that compel them to want to stick around, push through difficulty, and depend on others.If your character has all the money, connections, and resources they need, why join a yakuza? What are they looking for? What do they want/need from other people that they can't get themselves? What might the group want/need from them?Ask for help.
If you're not sure how to handle a situation, feel dissatisfied or stuck, or simply want a sounding board about an idea, please reach out! Problems are best handled while they're still small and most RP issues are solvable.

YAKUZA

Nakamura-kai

A gang made up of the dregs of other failed clans, just starting to earn a name for itself in territory violently taken by a corporation named Waystar Orion in a bout of opportunity.

Based out of: Southern half of the 'Little Garlemald' neighborhood in Shirogane.

  • Protection. There are a lot of other gangs out there who would disrupt the neighborhood. Businesses can get peace of mind for a reasonable price.

  • Smuggling. Working on it.

  • Gambling hall. Working on it.

This list is not comprehensive - the gang is in the early stages of its rise, so these things may change/more may be added over time as our plot develops.

SECURITY FRONT

Kurenai Tokumu

Our business operates as a legitimate practice that offers a full range of security services to clients in Kugane. Our ties with the yakuza are intentionally hidden from view.

  • Property and asset protection. Guarding warehouses, businesses, manors, and more.

  • Secure delivery and acquisitions. Finding, obtaining, and moving cargo (and sometimes people) that can't go through official channels.

  • Personal security detail. Guarding VIPs from harm.

  • Surveillance. Watching, listening, and knowing.

  • Threat assessment and management. Deciding who or what is a problem and how it gets handled.

  • Emergency response. We may be the first on the scene when something goes wrong.

  • Private investigation. Finding answers and handling intel.

HOW TO JOIN

We're glad you're interested in joining! Here's what you need to apply:1. Read our player code.
2. Have a character profile ready (carrd, RPhub, text document, etc.)
3. Be 18+ both IC and OOC, no exceptions.
4. Click the button below to join our server and follow the instructions there to open a ticket with the moderators.A moderator will chat with you about your application and answer any questions. If it looks like a good fit, we'll schedule a short IC interview to check basic RP skill and etiquette and to establish your character with the company. Have a different idea for how your character gets involved? We'd love to hear it.IMPORTANT: Tell us whether your character will join the yakuza directly or the legitimate security front, Kurenai Tokumu. The two sides work closely together, so this is a choice of opportunities, not cliques. Yakuza characters are held to a stricter standard, which may rarely call for yubitsume or a blackout tattoo called shuniyubi, which marks the finger of a character who refuses to cut it.CONTACT
